Graveside Flowers at Union Cemetery, Bakersfield

We deliver funeral flowers to Union Cemetery, 730 East Potomac Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93307. It is the oldest cemetery in Bakersfield, on East Potomac Avenue, and a good number of services there are graveside only rather than a chapel service first.

If the service is today or tomorrow, call (661) 588-7997. Tell us the name on the service and the time and we will tell you honestly whether we can make it.

What works outdoors at Union Cemetery

A graveside-only service is often short — twenty minutes, sometimes less — and everything has to work outdoors from the moment it arrives. In summer that plot can sit above 100 degrees in full sun with nothing to hold water, so we use flowers that are built for it and skip the ones that are not.

  • Casket saddle — sits directly on the casket, built low and secured so it travels. From $199.99.
  • Standing spray on a weighted easel — still right for friends and coworkers. We use a heavier base outdoors. From $324.99.
  • Wreath or cross — built tight, which is why they handle heat better than most. From $299.99.
  • Cemetery vase arrangements — built for the cone or vase at the marker, so something stays after everyone leaves. From $89.99.
  • Loose stems for mourners — a bundle of single stems so people can place one as they pass. It costs very little and families thank us for it more than anything else.

Timing for a graveside service

  • 45 minutes to an hour before the service, not earlier. Left out longer in summer and you have paid for flowers nobody sees at their best.
  • Tell us the plot or section if you have it. A large cemetery is a big place and a family name is not always enough to find the right spot.
  • Some cemeteries take deliveries at the office and carry them out themselves. They are not consistent about it, so we ring ahead.
  • For a morning service we build the afternoon before and keep it cold overnight.

Our same-day cutoff is 12pm. For anything tied to a graveside time, call the shop rather than ordering online — we will want the cemetery, the time and the family name before we start.

What happens to the flowers afterwards

Union Cemetery clears graveside flowers after a set period like everywhere else, and there are rules about what can stay permanently at a marker. Ask the office before you order something you want left there.

If the family wants to keep a piece, someone should take it when they leave — it will not still be there in a week.

What it costs

Standing sprays for a service start at $324.99 and go up with size. Casket sprays start at $199.99, and arrangements for the family home start at $64.99. Tell us your budget and we will tell you what it actually buys before you commit to it.

The card message

One line, plainly signed. Most graveside cards are read once, standing up, and then kept.
