What works at a graveside on Kern Canyon Road
Hillcrest services are outdoors, on open ground, often in full sun. An arrangement built for an air-conditioned chapel will not hold up there, so we build these differently without being asked - hardier flowers, weighted easels, nothing that collapses in the heat.
- Standing sprays on a weighted easel — from $324.99. The usual choice for friends, coworkers and neighbours. We use a heavier base outdoors.
- Casket saddles and sprays — sits on the casket itself, traditionally from the immediate family. From $199.99.
- Crosses and wreaths — built tight, so they handle heat better than most. From $299.99.
- Cemetery vase arrangements — for the vase or cone at the marker, so something stays after everyone leaves. From $89.99.
- Loose stems for mourners — single stems to place on the casket as people pass. Almost nobody thinks to order these, and families thank us for them most.

Timing for a Hillcrest service
- Order by 12pm for delivery the same afternoon, Monday to Saturday.
- For a graveside, we deliver 45 minutes to an hour before the service rather than earlier. Left out longer in summer and you have paid for flowers nobody sees at their best.
- Tell us the section or plot if you have it. Hillcrest is a big park and a family name is not always enough to find the right spot.
- For a Monday service, order by Saturday morning. We are closed Sundays.

Delivering to the family home in east Bakersfield
A graveside service is short. People stand, the words are said, and then everyone drives away — usually to somebody’s house. That is where flowers do the most good in the days afterwards.
Kern Canyon Road is an easy run for us and so is most of east Bakersfield, so a delivery to the graveside and a second one to a house nearby can go out together. Order them at the same time and tell us, and you only pay one delivery fee.
If you are a coworker, a neighbour, or anyone outside the immediate family, the home is usually the better place to send. Flowers at the graveside are seen for twenty minutes. Flowers at the home are seen for a week.
Visiting the marker later
Hillcrest is a memorial park, so a lot of what we take out there is not for a service at all. It is for a birthday, an anniversary, or the date itself, months and years afterwards. Those arrangements are built low and tight so they hold in the wind that comes down the canyon.
Check with the cemetery office about what is allowed at a particular marker before you order — rules differ by section, and we would rather you knew first than found out when you got there.

Standing sprays for a graveside service start at $324.99 and go up with size. Casket saddles start at $199.99, crosses and wreaths at $299.99, and arrangements for the family home start at $64.99. Tell us your budget and we will tell you honestly what it buys before you commit to it. For an outdoor service we will sometimes steer you toward a smaller, sturdier piece rather than a bigger one, because that is what actually looks right at the end of the afternoon.
The card message
Keep it short, and write it expecting to be read outdoors. “With deepest sympathy — the Navarro family” is enough. Sign it with the name the family will recognise rather than a full formal one. We use a weatherproof holder on anything going to a graveside, because a paper card pinned to an easel in a canyon breeze does not survive the service. When you order online you can see exactly how your message will sit on the card before you pay.
