Same-Day Flower Delivery in Bakersfield: How It Actually Works

Every florist in Bakersfield advertises same-day delivery. Very few explain what that actually means, which is how people end up ordering at 4pm on a Friday and being surprised when the flowers turn up Saturday.

Here is exactly how it works at our shop, including the parts that are not in our favour.

The cutoff is 12pm, and here is why

Order by 12 noon and your flowers go out that same afternoon. Order after 12 and they go out the next delivery day.

The reason is not arbitrary. Everything we send is built that day. A designer takes your order, pulls stems, conditions them, builds the arrangement, and then it gets loaded into a van and driven. That is a couple of hours of real work before anyone gets in a vehicle, and the driver needs enough daylight left to actually complete a route across town. Twelve o'clock is the last point where all of that still fits into an afternoon.

Where we deliver

All of Bakersfield, plus the surrounding communities - Shafter, Oildale, Rosedale, Seven Oaks, Stockdale, Southwest and the outlying areas around them. If you are unsure whether your address is in range, put it in at checkout or call us. We will tell you straight rather than take the order and figure it out later.

Deliveries run Monday to Saturday. We do not run a Sunday route. If something has to arrive on a Sunday - and occasionally it does, for a service - call us and we will talk through what is possible.

What happens if nobody is home

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that it depends on the weather and the address.

If it is a safe, shaded spot and the temperature is reasonable, our driver will leave the arrangement at the door, out of direct sun, and let you know it has been delivered. Flowers sitting in a Bakersfield doorway at 108 degrees are not fine for more than a few minutes, so on a hot day we will not leave something exposed. In that case the driver will try the recipient, then try you, and if neither works the arrangement comes back to the shop and we redeliver.

You can help by giving us a mobile number for the recipient. It costs you nothing and it is the single thing that most reliably prevents a failed delivery.

Hospitals

We deliver to Bakersfield Memorial, Mercy, Adventist Health and the smaller facilities around them. A few things worth knowing before you order:

• Give us the patient's full name and, if you have it, the room number. Hospitals will not go looking for a partial name.
• ICU and some maternity or oncology units do not accept flowers at all. If you are sending to one of those, we will tell you when you order and suggest something that will get through - a plant, a balloon arrangement, or holding delivery until they move to a regular room.
• If the patient is discharged before we arrive, the flowers come back to us and we will redeliver to their home.

Offices, schools and businesses

Business addresses are the easiest deliveries we do, because someone is always there. Get us the company name and, ideally, a suite or floor. If there is a front desk, we will leave it with them.

One tip: if the whole point is to surprise somebody at work, order for the morning rather than the afternoon. Flowers that turn up at 4:45pm on a Friday get carried to the car in a hurry rather than sat on a desk all day where everybody sees them.

Funeral homes and churches

Different rules apply here, and getting them wrong is expensive in a way that matters. Service flowers need to arrive one to two hours before the service begins, not at the start of it, because the staff have to set the room.

What we need from you

A delivery goes smoothly when we have four things:

• The complete address, including apartment or suite number
• A phone number for the recipient
• The date it needs to arrive, and the time if it is tied to an event
• What you want the card to say

That is it. Everything else we can work out.

When same-day is not possible

We would rather tell you now than disappoint you later. Same-day is genuinely difficult on Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, where routes are booked out days in advance. It is also not possible if you are asking for a very specific flower we would need to bring in, or a large event piece.

On the big holidays, order early. Not because we want the money sooner, but because the last few slots on those days go fast and we hate turning people away.

The short version

Order by 12pm, give us a phone number for the recipient, and tell us if it is tied to a time. Do that and your flowers will be on the doorstep the same afternoon, built by hand that morning in our Brimhall Road studio and driven by someone who works here.
